Kodeeswari Women’s Day 2026 series

The clock struck 6 in the evening, and it was time to take the children downstairs to the apartment’s play area. Shiela hurriedly finished preparing supper and Sandhya shut down her laptop and closed a client call as the ladies made their way, down the elevator, kids in tow.

When the toddlers settled into their play routine, Sandhya was all excited to tell Shiela about the new job that she was going to be taking up shortly.  “They are paying more, but on the flip side, work -from-home options are limited and the hours are longer”, she said, not knowing whether to be happy or sad. Sandhya realised that she needed a nanny for the child and a cook to manage the household. But then, if expenses also increase in line with her income, was it going to be worth it? she wondered aloud. How do I save for that holiday abroad or fund my plans for early retirement if I don’t step up my investments? she thought to herself.

Shiela listened in attentively, even as she had one eye on the kids. “ I understand your concern Sandhya”, she said, “These days I too find that money just flows out like water. Between e-commerce and quick commerce platforms, EMIs and the ubiquitous UPI payment option, we only realise it at the end of the month that we have little savings left! With my husband being the only earning member of our family of three, the pressure is a lot!”, she gasped. “Whatever little we can save, we do put it in FDs and RDs. But sometimes, I just wonder how I will manage if anything happens to him or if he isn’t around”. She had blurted out what she feared the most.

Having good control over their expenses was important both to Sandhya and to Shiela. What Sandhya didn’t share with Shiela was that they had booked profits on quite a few of their equity holdings and used it up for upgrading their apartment recently. And she rued the fact that she didn’t allocate more to gold funds at a time when prices shot through the roof. Always busy at work, she kept avoiding calls from her financial advisor for a review. It was neither urgent nor important for her, every single time!

On the other hand, Shiela kept wondering – could she cut down on the expenses and grow their family savings better? She had heard Sandhya mention about mutual funds off and on, but being a humanities student, it was all Greek and Latin to her. Even, Math and Science seemed easier than understanding these complicated products, she thought. How she wished someone could help her be more financially secure!

Shiela needed stability to prepare for life’s uncertainties. Sandhya needed review, reset and clarity for the path ahead.

They have postponed enough. This Women’s Day, they resolve to make a start.
